Some more trouble shooting info: I am running a Pi3B+ with raspbian installed using PINN I had to manually add dtparam=i2c1=on, dtparam=i2c0=on, and dtparam=i2c_arm=on to the config.txt. This solved my original issue of not being able to do any i2c stuff. Now i can run i2cdetect -y 0 and I see a few things show up. If I do the same for 1 I don't see anything. I'm assuming I should see a few things listed in the table here. I hope this info is helpful.
